Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Students participating in the HRRB work as a team to read books and compete in a game format to answer reading comprehension style questions. Students in grades four through eight read titles from the Georgia Children's Book Award list. Students in grades nine through twelve read titles from the Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers. Origin Mrs. Helen Ruffin founded the reading bowl in Dekalb County. She was an elementary school media specialist that had a vision. She wanted to inspire her student to read. Being a member of the Georgia Children's Book Award nominee program, she was inspired to use the nominated books as the foundation for the reading comprehension bowl. Today several counties across Georgia are sharing Mrs. Ruffin's vision, and are active in the reading bowl. The bowl has grown to include students in grades four through twelve. Four Regional Bowls now exist to handle the overwhelming involvement. The regional winners meet each year at the Georgia Children's Literature Conference to compete for the State Championship. This year students in grades four and five will be reading 15 titles on the Georgia Children's Book Award nominee list designated for elementary students. Students in grades six through eight will read all 20 of the Georgia Children's Book Award nominees. Students in grades nine through twelve will be reading the 20 titles on the Georgia Peach Teen Book Award Nominees list. Game Format 1. Each school participates in six rounds. 2.
